Great visual and great post. Your point is well made and I agree that without focus you cannot claim that any type of incentive compensation is successful, anymore than you can claim your strategy worked after you closed your eyes and heaved a football into the heavens. Luck is fun, but it is not a strategy for long-term success

You'd be amazed (or perhaps not) at the number of times I've seen objectives prepared *after* the results were in. As in, "how do I fill out this assessment form to give a "4" rating?"

Makes you wonder where the company's interests play, if at all, with certain managers.
