Well said, Dan. Courageously crowding into the mediocre middle, seeking defensible follower-ship status, is hardly a leadership strategy. Excellence is an outlier, rarely captured by imitating the consensus relative rate of change. Similarly, it is the outliers that move faster or slower (or even in reverse) from the norm that justify pay surveys, but only if your absolute salaries are out of line; and that shows up in recruiting experience very swiftly.
