BRAVO Chuck..... As a lifelong, entrepreneurial. "hard money" contractor, I have ALWAYS implemented a "pay for performance" program and even now, in my role as an academic, I based my GRADES on "performance" as well. (All our 6 month long, graduate level blended learning courses are built on "Project Based Learning" and the grades for these courses are based on "Earned Value".

In our global training and consulting company, everyone from the CEO down to our office boys are compensated based on how "successful" each engagement is. On the plus side, it rewards those who are truly committed and engaged. On the own side, not everyone can thrive in this kind of an environment and you have to go through a high number of people before you build a fully functioning team. But once you have the team, they tend to stay with the company for a long time.....
