Friday Special at the Cafe

Every Friday, we make it our business to find an especially interesting compensation/reward oriented blog post from the past week from somewhere outside the Cafe, and highlight it here.  This week we highlight a post by Frank Roche, author of KnowHR. 

We here at the Cafe believe that communication is a critical part of sound reward plan implementation and management.  Nobody champions clear employee communication more passionately than Frank - and his featured post "Get Out of the Obfuscatorium" is a call for all of us to "get rid of confusing and fakey-schmakey language in employee communications".  Here, here!

As a founding member of CEPHRP (Committee to End Precious HR Phrases), Frank lays out the Committee's framework and invites readers to join on.  Tenets from the framework include:

1. Employees are employees, not human capital.

2. If you say, “employees are our most important asset” you sure as hell better be able to prove it.
3. It’s “use,” not “utilize.”
4. If it sounds precious when you read it out loud, dump it.
5. Engaged employees have rings; great employees know what needs to be done and do it.

Number 5 is a personal favorite of mine.
