I'm a working mom and knowingly accept lower pay than my male and female colleagues in exchange for fewer working hours, increased flexibility in when I work and forgiveness when I can't make all the afternoon meetings. I produce as much as my colleagues but I work less and I am definitely less available. Sometimes I miss the extravagent compensation of my consulting days but it was my choice to work less and I feel fairly compensated with respect to my colleagues. My husband earns more but he also works full-time while I'm at home with the kids. So at least in our case, the study results seem fair and appropriate.

My experience parallels yours, tho my kids are now college age. I knowingly and willingly traded flexibility for career and wage growth, because it was the right choice for me at that time. I agree with you that some of these choices (to work less hours, to take time off from one's career, to circumvent promotional opportunities, to avoid business travel, etc.) come with consequences and that we must accept responsibility for our choices and their consequences. As long as the consequences are fair across different groups, and not different for some than others.
