Hmm...not sure you've cracked this.

I particularly bristled at your comment: "Communication takes some time and effort, but it's virtually free to provide it, so why do so many organizations fail in this key element of management and leadership?"

With internal communication--you often get what you pay for, particularly if you treat it as a "virtually free" afterthought.

One other thing that's missing--any reference to organizational intent--it's as if you "fix" the issues you highlight, you'll be on the right course. You could well be headed into an iceberg...or an ambush.

This is good list to start with and Communication is always good to lead with in any organization. I think that many organizations are headed for a game of musical chairs, many employees will look for a breath of fresh air and a change of scenery after all the layoffs, pay decreases, longer hours etc. Just a slight recovery in employment and many will be open to thought of moving on to "greener pastures". Great post!

It will be good to see those who aren't in it for the long haul leave. They were bound to leave sooner ot later when the money was greater elsewhere.

People with an overriding self-interest aren't too concerned about what happens with the company and frequently act to its detriment. To them, their current job is just one of many stopping points on their quest to get what they deserve.

The company is better off with people who care more about their jobs and the firm than with their career.

All turnover is not bad, and we shouldn't want to keep people who could care less about their work, or their employer. Some turnover is beneficial, and I would include in the beneficial category folks who are engaged in work strictly for their own self-interest, and not what they do or who they are doing it for.

Of course, nearly everyone works for the money, but if that's all you care about, you're probably not providing anywhere near as much benefit to your employer, as compared to someone who is truly engaged in and cares about their work and work product. If someone is willing to jump ship for a minimal bump in pay, then I say don't let the door hit you on the way out!
