Here Here! Love it. And... motivations not only vary by socioeconomic levels but by time as well... This year it may be money - next year progress... the next year - money again. We are complex and ever-changing. Managers MUST be connected to their employees to understand their needs AND wants.

It has been said that motivation is a door unlocked from the inside. I'd go a bit further and say that employees have the keys for unlocking the motivation door and the managers in the organization need to understand which door to present to employees.

Good analogy, Paul. Maybe even better than "olfaction" (the sense of smell) that tends to be my favorite parallel, with its similar key-lock functionality which is still not completely understood... just like human behavior.
