Great summary of executive compensation choices, Dan! (Note: I managed to refrain from using the synonym term "options.")

http://www.erieri.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=NewsRoom.Dsp_Release&PressReleaseID=179 is a quarterly study showing the trends and extent of usage of various approaches at public corporations. http://www.compensationcafe.com/2011/03/employer-type-doesnt-affect-executive-cash.html reinforces your underlying point that all the fish swim in the same water. Even if the lures may vary in style, they still must be equally attractive for effectiveness. Equity is not always the appropriate or possible reward.
