Chuck: I think your analogies are accurate. I think, however, that too many companies, especially technology companies tend to place too great an emphasis on retaining only what you call the "go-getters".

I think John Steinbeck strikes close to home in the following quote: "The things we admire in men, kindness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second".

Maybe its time for companies to start looking at how to re-inculcate some of these admired traits back into their cultures. I'm not conviced that the traits are mutually exclusive.
