Tom Selleck's character says it too in the movie "Three Men and a Baby" as he is reading the sports page to the page, "It's not what you read but the tone you use." Or something to that effect. I would agree the impact of both the reading, the tone, and the content would influence that child's behavior and interests down the road. (I don't know why I have a preference for soft spoken athletes of [insert favorite sports team], says the now grown woman.)

Most interesting that performance pay alone can negatively impact performance. It makes sense though that motivation is tied to knowing that what we are doing is making a difference. This seems like it will be more relevant with the generation starting with Millenials and beyond.
