"If the findings of this study can be generalized to organizations outside of manufacturing firms"...that is the question.

I would like to know what others think, can it be applied to other industries?

If an employee has a number in their head of fair pay for their role, and that number is achieved thru base plus variable, then I think variable only serves to fulfill the perception.

An incentive that would motivate the employee above and beyond would be something that an employee doesn't feel entitled to in the first place. The extra carrot motivates.

I do think you can apply the idea to other industries.
