The original image is an interesting way to illustrate equality and equity, but its application to compensation issues - especially those connected to performance/merit - seems more elusive.

In the initial image, for example, the height of the kids is a factor beyond their control. That is often not the case when it comes to performance results. In addition, there is a certain presumption that all three kids should have equal access to the game - or to the enjoyment of the game. That simply cannot be the case in compensation - the budgets are simply not going to enable that. If the image reflected the reality of the compensation budget, the three kids would have a single pair of binoculars that they had to share with everyone in the same section of the stands!
