Some European employers have developed terminations of undesirables into a fine art. They simply withhold making a permanent work assignment for an initial period. If unhappy, they announce that the target is a mismatch for the organization's culture and, sorry to say, simply doesn't fit in properly, old boy. No details are offered, typically.

"Bad fit" is gentler than "you are being sacked," as well.

Personally, I've always thought that human enterprises should not consist of clones with homogeneous characteristics and identical interests. That leads to isolation and stagnation. Better to make mutually productive use of individual KSAs, even when you can't stand the person.

I always hired for talent, not for friendship.
