Wow. Margaret, I couldn't agree more.

The expression "attract and retain" (and its alliterate sibling, "recruit and retain") has become so trite, yet it is constantly trotted out by Human Resources as if the very expression itself was potent.

The reality is that neither attracting nor retaining are ends unto themselves. Painting with a broad brush, attracting nor retaining are both byproducts of having an organization with engaged employees.

HR needs to focus on creating that engaged organization - and then they will not have difficulty attracting, they will not have difficulty retaining.
