Hi, IBM has been transparent on grades for a long time, and managers were supposed to inform employee on their position in range if requested.
Nevertheless, they often felt uncomfortable about this and serious concerns were expressed when we considered displaying comparatio on salary statements, so your article rings a bell for sure.
The comp team invested time and energy on enablement material, conversations and coaching. Still, no one thought it would be a piece of cake.
Guess what ? all hells did not break lose, actually the quality of salary conversations improved, with much more focus around skills and career. Looking back, it's been a foundational step for us, and one I definitely recommend to all!
