Prime tip: spend the entire prior year assuring that the eventual summary review is not a surprise party.

Quarterly (or more frequent) reviews can be accumulated, placed in perspective, periodically updated with the newest most relevant guidance and simply rolled up in an anti-climatic final summary "annual review." Avoid the all too frequent situation where the boss can't sleep the night before the review and the employee can't sleep the night after it. This is NOT new advice!
